By photosynthesis is a study of connections and constants between the location and the time and work of Vincent van Gogh. Influences that return thematically in his later work would seem to be present in the environment of his youth.
We gathered samples of leaves from twelve of the monumental trees in the churchyard where his father was pastor, from each tree two samples. One two weeks before the longest day and one two weeks after. The results show how the trees chemistry changes as they prepare for the oncoming winter months. The colours are remarkably strong which is probably because of the poor quality of the sandy soil, and the reactions of the plants not consistent. The evergreen trees sampled reacted quite differently to the desiduous trees.
