CRYSTALLIZATION
Analogue Photographic Research into Structure, Colour and Transformation

Crystallization is an ongoing fundamental analogue photographic research into the relationship between geometry, colour, light and material transformation.
The research originated in observations of geological and mineral formations in the Rhine region, including cave structures and dried Rhine clay. These observations provided an initial material and spatial point of departure. The project has since shifted from the photographic representation of geological phenomena towards an investigation of how processes of construction, fragmentation and transformation can occur within the photographic image itself.



The works are produced in the colour darkroom through successive exposures under the enlarger. I work with constructed geometric masks consisting of individual facets. Some of these geometric structures also occur in my Polygon Synthesis research, but within Crystallization they are subjected to a fundamentally different photographic process.
The facets are exposed, shifted, overlapped and recombined through successive stages. Changes in exposure and aperture influence density, transparency and the spatial relationships within the image. As these photographic operations accumulate, the original geometric structure moves between recognition and abstraction.


Colour is integral to this process. Through systematic shifts in yellow, magenta and cyan filtration, the photographic response of individual facets and overlapping layers changes. Colour is therefore not predetermined as an aesthetic outcome. Green, yellow, red, pink, violet and other chromatic states can emerge through variations within the same photographic system.
In this sense, colour is an event: it occurs through the specific interaction of filtration, exposure, aperture, photographic material and the successive construction of the image.
The colour enlarger is consequently not simply a production tool but an essential part of the research. Its system of Y/M/C filtration and controlled exposure allows small changes in photographic conditions to produce substantial shifts in colour, density, transparency and spatial perception.

Filtering Facets
Exposure and filtering diagrams register the individual stages of this process. They function as working structures within the research, making it possible to trace, repeat and systematically alter photographic decisions while leaving space for material outcomes that cannot be entirely predicted.


Preliminary Research
The initial research developed through field observations of geological and mineral formations in the Rhine region. Analogue photographic registrations of a cave structure, the landscape above it and a fragment of dried Rhine clay explored relationships between geological matter, transformation and photographic representation.
These observations remain part of the genealogy of Crystallization, but the research has increasingly moved towards the photographic image itself as a site of transformation.
